Why do I know exactly what’s wrong with me but still can’t change it?

You know what’s “wrong” with you and still feel stuck because genuine healing happens at a deeper, felt level in your body and nervous system, not just through cognitive understanding. Your conscious mind can understand patterns, but your body needs to experience safety to release them. This gap between knowing and changing is where many people get stuck, trying to fix a deep-seated issue with surface-level tools.

Why does knowing what’s wrong still leave me stuck?

Your intellectual understanding engages your prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that processes self-awareness, insight, and reasoning. This cognitive work can offer clarity and even temporary relief, but it’s not where automatic responses or survival strategies are rooted. Those patterns live in your subconscious and nervous system, requiring a different kind of engagement. As I teach in The 90% Principle, transformation happens at this subconscious level, not just the conscious 5-10% of your mind. You can articulate your wounds perfectly, but your body might still brace for impact.

How do I change if understanding isn’t enough?

Change requires a truly holistic mind-body-soul approach. Mental understanding alone won’t change your body’s patterns or subconscious conditioning. Instead, change happens when you create a new baseline of felt safety. This means moving beyond talking or analyzing into somatic engagement, where your nervous system learns that it no longer needs to mobilize or shut down. Healing requires inviting your body into the process, allowing it to integrate new experiences of safety slowly and experientially. This bridge between cognitive awareness and nervous system recalibration is how insight truly becomes identity reclamation, creating profound and lasting change.

To understand how to engage your body in this deeper healing, I talk more about closing the gap between knowing and felt safety in my podcast, The Simple Source, called “Why You’ve Been in Therapy for Years but Haven’t Healed” and “How to Go From Breakthrough to Embodiment by Mastering Integration.”
