Why do I still feel so overwhelmed by grief and pain about things that happened years ago?

Feeling overwhelmed by grief and pain from things that happened years ago isn’t a sign that you’re failing to heal, but rather an indication that those past experiences still hold unexpressed grief. The truth is, grief is much broader than just loss due to death; it’s about allowing ourselves to feel the absence of what we wanted, whether that was to feel safe, seen, or loved. Until this underlying grief is fully processed, those older wounds remain active, continuing to affect your present reality.

Why does old pain still feel so active?

When you neglect to fully process your grief, it keeps those experiences stuck within you, hindering your brain and body from truly healing and moving beyond them. Grief isn’t merely about death or transition; it encompasses all forms of loss and change, including the absence of unmet needs like safety, being seen, or feeling loved. When we avoid this essential process, we hold onto pain, guilt, shame, and other unresolved emotions, which continue to activate as if they’re fresh wounds, impacting your emotional patterns and physical well-being.

How do I finally move through this old grief?

Moving through persistent grief involves incorporating intentional and specific grieving into your healing practice. This means allowing yourself to feel all your feelings and to grieve everything you felt you lost, lost out on, or were betrayed by. It is about acknowledging all the times your heart hurt, whether from disappointment, feeling unseen, unloved, shamed, or not enough. For me, grief has been a massive part of my own healing journey, particularly after becoming a widow and a survivor of various childhood traumas. It taught me that grieving is a profound expression and extension of love, creating space for true healing and growth.
