If you’ve been using affirmations or positive thinking to shift your reality but still feel stuck, it’s not a sign of failure. It’s often because beliefs are not just mental thoughts; they are deeply embodied patterns stored in your nervous system and subconscious mind. Your conscious desires for change can’t override subconscious programming your body is still running, leading to an impasse.
Why your conscious efforts don’t stick
Many conventional healing approaches focus on willpower and surface-level tactics, but these only engage your conscious mind, which controls a mere five percent of your life. Your subconscious, meanwhile, handles the other ninety-five percent, shaping your reality through deep-seated beliefs and narratives formed from past experiences. When your conscious mind declares, “I am safe,” but your body is operating from an old, wounded belief of unsafety, that internal conflict means true transformation can’t happen. Positive thinking, while valuable, can become spiritual bypassing if it’s used to avoid the deeper work of acknowledging and resolving fears and traumas.
Unlocking change through your subconscious
I spent years trying every diet, program, and book, only to manage symptoms without ever truly healing. It was only when I turned inward, embraced my emotions, and began to relate with my subconscious parts that lasting change finally occurred. My body was traumatized because I was traumatized, and my mind was stuck in narratives never corrected. True, lasting belief change requires moving beyond just mindset work. It must include the body, accessing the subconscious to release the emotional charge holding old beliefs in place. This shifts not just what you think, but how your entire system operates.
This is the deeper truth I share in an episode of my podcast, The Simple Source, called “Why Affirmations Aren’t Enough: The Science of Why Willpower and Quick Fixes Lead to Struggle,” and in “From Mindset to Somatic: How to Heal Limiting Beliefs Stuck in Your Body.”
