Are your morning breathwork, vagus nerve resets, and calming routines actually making your anxiety worse? In this episode, I break down the clinical phenomenon of relaxation-induced anxiety and why forcing your nervous system to calm down causes your body to brace rather than unwind.
You”ll learn why your brain treats your daily calming routine as an active threat, why relaxation-induced anxiety occurs, and what your nervous system actually needs before it finally releases its bracing response. I also break down the two-process trap (trying to relax while scanning for tension), the observer effect of constant self-measurement, and why temporary relief can create a dependency loop that keeps stress running the show.
I share my own history in this loop: perfectionism, chronic symptoms, and the exhausting fear of not healing “correctly,” and what finally shifted things, which wasn’t a stricter routine. It was doing less, dropping coercion, and building a real internal environment of safety through unconditional self-love, joy, and ease.
If you’re ready to stop micromanaging your body and start feeling safe inside it, find out why true healing requires moving past forced regulation into somatic safety.

Why Your Regulation Routine Triggers Anxiety
Linda Villines 0:00
If you’re spending an hour every morning on breath work, tracking your HRV and trying to force your nervous system to calm down, but your jaw is still tight when you watch television and your stomach is still in knots when you think about that person who annoys you at work, stop. All of that effort to self-regulate isn’t resolving your anxiety. It’s the precise thing keeping tension locked in your body. You have been doing everything right, friend. You’re on your yoga mat at six o’clock in the morning, you run through those breathing and meditation techniques, you check your wearable to see if your stats improved. You’ve learned all the nervous system terminology. But after months or years of this, you still get triggered by the same shit. You still catch yourself clenching your teeth in the car for no reason. And you still snap at that person that you love, and then you spiral about it for an hour. And one frustrating email sends your stomach through the floor. And then you feel guilty for being upset or stressed or annoyed. And then you assume that the breath work failed you or the meditation failed you, or worse, that something is just wrong with you. But again, you’re doing everything correctly, and there’s no one and nothing to blame. The issue isn’t the practices themselves. The problem lives in how you engage in those practices. So in clinical research, there’s a recognized phenomenon where relaxation protocols make certain people measurably more anxious, not more relaxed. That’s why your daily calming routine actually causes your body to brace instead of unwind. And anxiety comes in so many forms and it can be sneaky. And the newest form can look a lot like healing. It looks like your morning protocol, your supplement stack, the streak counter on your app, and that tracker on your Apple Watch. And all of your effort is aimed at being more calm and more regulated. But the effect isn’t a nervous system that feels relaxed. It’s a nervous system that feels monitored, threatened, and braced. That’s when anxiety-reducing protocols end up reinforcing the anxiety. So picture yourself sitting on your yoga mat at 6 a.m., right? You’re doing that four-count inhale, you’re holding your breath, but your mind is racing and your emotions are actually being contained by that breath, not released. And you may close your eyes and you may tell yourself, I’m relaxed, I’m calm, but you’re not realizing that your forearms are still tight because those statements act as commands rather than reassurance. And then you glance at your wrist, waiting for that green light or whatever to prove that you are relaxed. I used to go through those emotions too. I did all of the things that I thought I was supposed to do to heal and release my trauma and calm my body. But your body notices what you’re not saying out loud. It feels that you haven’t truly surrendered into safety. It knows that you are still in surveillance and stress mode. My name is Linda Villines. Welcome to The Simple Source, where we go beyond surface level self-help to show you how to actually heal and liberate your sore self. By the end of this episode, you’re gonna know why your brain treats your calm down routine as a threat and why the things you’re doing to minimize anxiety are actually perpetuating your anxiety, and what your nervous system actually needs before it finally lets go of that bracing.
When Healing Turns Into Homework
Linda Villines 3:33
So let’s break down the day in the life of someone who is self-aware, who’s trying to manage their anxiety and stress, right? Their box breathing in the car before work. There’s a vagus nerve reset between client phone calls. There’s a grounding exercise in the office bathroom because someone spoke to you with an edge in their voice and it rubbed you the wrong way. And then the evening window sequence, right? With the magnesium, the correct lighting, the sleep score waiting on your phone, like a report card that’s gonna judge you. And then somewhere along the way, self-regulation stopped being something that supports your healing and your life. And it became like a second job. And healing turned into homework. Your day turned into managing yourself instead of loving yourself. And everything that you’ve been doing to grow and to evolve and to quote unquote be better and heal has actually become an energy drain instead of an energy replenisher because healing’s a job now for you and it’s not enjoyable on a soul level or human level. And that’s why your anxiety remains something to manage and not something that you’re truly free of. Because every hink in your neck, every time you get triggered or activated, you feel like you’re failing. Every restless night becomes proof that your routine is missing something. And when you get a little ragey in traffic, that small inner voice goes, Well, shit, I didn’t do the full 20 minutes of meditation this morning. You know what? I should do an extra yoga class this week. And so the practices that were supposed to create peace inside your body are instead is making your body feel like it’s on guard. Like whatever it’s doing, it’s just not enough. Like something always needs to be prepared, excavated, fixed. And so your body’s not at peace. That’s why the anxiety is still anxiety. And then there’s a vicious reinforcing dependency loop that then gets created. The practices work temporarily. 10 minutes of slow breathing does downshift your heart rate. Meditation does quiet the noise for like an hour. And you do experience relief. And then that relief creates a belief in your brain of I have to keep doing this. But then that relief wears off by lunchtime. Something activates your anxiety, something stresses you out, something upsets you. And then that dependency gets louder, right? I need to do more. I need to find more protocols, more apps, new supplements. I need to search and save more YouTube videos and podcast episodes. And that relief that was supposed to free you then becomes a leash. So you’re not healing your anxiety. You’re just reinforcing it throughout the day and you’re calling it your healing routine. And that’s how the dependency takes over your life. And then when the symptoms return, you blame yourself, right? You assume you weren’t consistent enough or you didn’t do it right or you didn’t do it for long enough, or you did the wrong thing, or that your system’s too traumatized, too messed up. And so then you end up tightening that routine, forcing yourself to do more, which of course raises the whole stakes of everything. And then your exhaustion just deepens.
The Dependency Trap
Linda Villines 6:54
Me and that dependency loop, we are old friends. It ran my life for many years. And when my late husband was diagnosed with cancer and I was dealing with a laundry list of chronic conditions, my daily life was just protocols, strict, restrictive diets, precise supplement schedules. I was exercising religiously. I mean, I still do, but I love it now. Then it was something I forced myself to do. And I was tracking every symptom, how I felt after I did that thing, after I did this thing. And I executed every protocol with enviable discipline and commitment because I’m a mega Virgo and I was a mega perfectionist and overachiever. And so on paper, I was quote unquote doing everything right to heal. But in reality, my back would go out all the time. My neck was like, there was always a kink in my neck. There was always something new that showed up that had to deal with, some new symptoms, some new problem. And I was just exhausted all the time. And my body was not regulated, not at peace. My anxiety was not diminishing. It was just being managed and poorly because I actually developed a new anxiety, right? Anxiety about healing properly. And all of that meant that my nervous system was never optimized for healing. It remained dysregulated. It remained brace for some threat that just wasn’t actually truly there. And I eventually realized that all of that doing more, doing it perfectly, being more strict, being more quote unquote dedicated to healing was actually just trapping my body in stress and survival mode because there was no joy, there was no love in what I was doing. Hypervigilance when you’re trying to heal is still hypervigilance. The very routines I had built to heal were actually communicating to my body every single second that it was in danger because I was just stressed all the time. So no wonder I was still anxious, tense, unhappy, dealing with loads of symptoms and various chronic conditions. If the tools you’re using genuinely calm or regulate or heal your nervous system, and you’re using them every day with consistency, then why do you still need them? And why does the tension and the anxiety return the moment that practice ends or you stop or you become more lax in your routine? Your body is not confused about how to heal. Every single cell in your body is designed with self-healing as an innate function. So your body is just simply responding precisely and intelligently, mind you, to the pressure and the stress and the emotional suppression that’s driving all of that effort. And you may think that the reason that your body isn’t fully relaxing is because you’re not trying hard enough. But it’s because your nervous system is interpreting all of your effort as an act of survival. So this episode is part of a three-part series on what actually allows your nervous system to release bracing as a default and truly learn ease as a baseline. So subscribe now so you don’t miss the next two episodes. Now, what if the reason your anxiety lingers is because you made relaxation mandatory? So your nervous system has an ancient, very specific relationship with being forced into compliance because stress and ease cannot coexist. So researchers call this phenomenon relaxation-induced anxiety.
Explaining Relaxation-Induced Anxiety
Linda Villines 10:46
In clinical trials, researchers repeatedly found a group of people who became measurably more anxious during relaxation exercises. Their heart rates would spike, their worry would increase, some people experienced like full-on panic. So the protocol designed to calm them actually triggered a stress response instead. Now that may seem like a paradox until you realize what relaxing on command actually does to a guarded body that doesn’t feel safe relaxing. So that demand to drop your armor, drop your defenses that you have likely spent decades building, telling your body to do that on command while you observe yourself doing that. For a mind, body, system conditioned to stay vigilant, dropping your guard is not relief. It feels dangerous because it means you’re being exposed. It means that you’re vulnerable. Let me explain that a little more. Okay. So when you force an internal state of relaxation, your brain runs two processes at once. So the first process tries to create the relaxation state, right? Slowing your breath, softening your jaw, thinking calm thoughts. And the second process checks whether it worked, right? That second process has really one job, and that’s to scan for tension, scan for anxiety, scan for failure, essentially, right? This isn’t working. Now, to confirm that you’re calm, part of your mind has to actively hunt for distress, that same distress that you’re trying to escape. So the scanning and the searching keeps that threat response alive, active in your neural wiring. And psychologists have actually documented this for decades, right? Controlling a mental state forces a background scan for the exact unwanted state. It’s like, don’t think about the pink elephant in the room. Well, you’re just gonna think about the pink elephant in the room. So whenever you’re stressed or you’re tired, that scanning, of course, is gonna win. So scanning for danger, like literally is the state of alert that keeps your body locked in stress and survival mode. So let’s go a little bit deeper, okay? Your conscious mind, the part of your brain that runs the protocol that monitors, holds five to 10% of your total processing power. And your subconscious autonomic part of your mind and your body, nervous system, runs the other 90%. And so that math is pretty undeniable, friend. If you’ve been doing the work but still feel stuck, like no matter how much healing, manifesting, or personal growth you invest in, or spiritual practices you try, something just isn’t clicking. You’re not alone and you’re not failing. The truth is, most teachings and approaches are outdated and only scratch the surface. My book, Unconditional, You Are Perfect As You Are, helps you understand exactly why things haven’t been clicking and how to resolve the root of why you’re struggling. Unconditional self-love isn’t just a nice idea if you truly want to be free. It’s the missing piece and the foundation for everything you desire. And you don’t have to do or figure everything out on your own. You deserve clear, comprehensive, and empowering step-by-step guidance in self-love, self-healing, and spiritual growth. Forced regulation is like 5% of your brain attempting to micromanage that other overwhelming 90%. And that 90%, right, your subconscious, is not designed to operate from executive control. It’s designed to read, to follow environmental signals, meaning what your whole system, what your field is sending out, which is largely communicated by your emotional state. So the signal your autonomic system gets from being constantly supervised is something’s wrong. Something’s wrong, or you wouldn’t be watching this closely. So monitoring acts as a threat signal because nothing truly safe requires continuous surveillance. You follow? So your brain contains networks specifically designed to compare what your body was ordered to feel against what it actually feels. So when you affirm I am calm while your forearms are clenched, that comparison produces a mismatch and that creates a prediction error because there was a prediction and it was disproven. And your brain treats those internal errors like active threats. And so that statement that you thought was going to soothe you arrives as a command, as coercion that your body can’t fulfill. And then that gap between command and your reality fires another alarm. And in physics, measuring a system actually changes the system. So some of you have probably heard of the observer effect. So your attention operates in that same law. So attention directed at your body is active measurement. And so, of course, your attention participates in and changes the state that it observes. And that means when your attention is fueled by anxiety, vigilance, anticipation of disappointment or failure, pressure, stress, essentially, your body registers that attention as a threat signal. And so you may think that your attention is like whatever, right? Inconsequential, but your focus literally shapes what you focus on. That’s how powerful you are. And science has proven that many times over. So imposing regulation means that your conscious mind is trying to enforce or dictate a relaxed state and then attempts that through breathing exercises, calming techniques. But your subconscious, your nervous system, and thus your body are operating on a very different program. So creating calm means effectively communicating true safety to your body. And you do that by creating conditions where your body concludes by its own intelligent design that no demand, no coercion exists. Because imposing is an ultimatum that your body experiences as stress, as disorganization. But communicating is environmental, is holistic. And your nervous system wants you to communicate in the language that it understands. This is what I teach in my source membership program. Healing your body requires understanding what your body needs, how your body speaks to you, how your body hears you. So if you’re forcing yourself to be calm, not anxious, and that’s not working, then what
Doing Less to Feel Safe
Linda Villines 18:31
does work? So let me tell you what 15 years of healing has reminded me and what crossing onto the side of freedom actually requires. And spoiler alert, it is not a stricter or more aggressive protocol. What actually broke the cycle is pretty counterintuitive for most people. I stopped all of it. I stopped the strict, you can’t eat anything but leafy greens and protein diets, the supplement stacking, all of the biohacks, the forced exercising, the hunt for the next modality, everything I described earlier. I just set it down, stopped engaging because years of that experiment had brought me more pain, new symptoms, and a brand new layer, brand new type of anxiety, right? Anxiety about whether I was healing correctly. So what actually worked was doing less, forcing less, and truly learning to trust and respect my body’s natural and powerful healing capability and the power of love and joy. And that meant that I let a ton of shit go. And not by performing release or spiritual bypassing, but truly choosing in the moment to stop stressing about everything that doesn’t matter, which when your husband is given two years left to live at the age of 37, you realize that that is basically 99% of everything. And that meant that I started prioritizing loving myself and stressing way the fuck less and inviting more ease, more joy. Again, not by pretending, not by spiritual bypassing, but by learning to connect with and trust myself and love myself and my body. So I started tuning into my body, asking my body what it wanted, what it needed, instead of making demands of it. And the answer was always do less, stress less. Let that shit go because it is irrelevant in the long run. And stop everything I didn’t truly want to do and start actively doing the things that my soul wanted and needed. And the immediate freedom was like this cascade of relief in my body that I felt. And it surprised me how fast my body responded to no longer being managed and scrutinized 24-7 as if it were this broken, fragile thing, how it was finally able to do the thing that I had been trying to will it to do for years, which was heal all on its own. You know, I spent years tracking every symptom, every chronic condition, managing and monitoring my body continuously, constantly. And for years, every protocol sent one unspoken command to my nervous system, which is you are a problem that needs to be solved. And so the moment that I stopped sending that signal, the environment my body was operating in shifted from struggle to ease because it finally heard the correct message, which is you are allowed to exist exactly as you are and be loved just like this by me. A chronically braced body that receives permission to. Let down its guard and its defensive, then gets the message that the threat is over. That’s the message that your body needs. And when it’s no longer stuck in this conflict between what your conscious mind wants and what your nervous system feels, that’s when your healing
The Joy Principle and Somatic Release
Linda Villines 22:19
opens up. And so this is what I call the joy principle, because healing cannot be stressful, because stress is literally the primary signal that turns off your natural healing capabilities. And healing, by definition, is the reclamation of freedom, wholeness, and well-being. And those are joyful states, not stressful states. And so the emotional state that is driving your practice is actually the practice. I talked about this in my previous episode, right? Why your body stays tense even when you try to self-regulate. But the same practice is not the same for different people or in different states. It’s the state that you are in when you are engaging in the practice that determines how effective or enjoyable that practice is. And ease is the literal biological door to true somatic release. It’s not the reward after struggling to heal. Because when ease is present, your self-healing functions that are built into every single cell in your body, they naturally turn back on because there’s no alarm telling them that they have to wait until some arbitrary threat has passed. But however, when stress is driving your effort, those self-healing cellular functions stay suppressed, right? Leaving you with symptom management day after day, month after month, year after year, instead of true freedom. And that is the difference that I lived in this same body. Because when I was trying so hard, so stressed about everything, so anxious about healing and doing so much, I was not healing. I was getting worse. I was getting more exhausted, more anxious. But when I stopped all of that struggling and trying so hard to heal, that’s when my body was like, huzzah. We’re not stressed, we’re not in danger. Let’s activate healing. So during the worst emotional conditions of my life, while my husband was dying of cancer, my body healed itself in months through love and ease rather than force and stress and struggling. And I talk about that in a couple of episodes throughout the show. But I also want to make clear that there’s nothing wrong with breath work. I love breath work. I teach it in my source membership program. I even have an entire breath work workshop, but I make the distinction between breath work you force and breath work your nervous system actually has capacity for. Because underneath every healing practice you engage in, your nervous system is really asking, why are we doing this? And when stress and anxiety and guilt and obligation answer instead of joy and love and ease, that healing practice that you have put so much faith in becomes a stress event. But when love and joy and real ease and a lack of pressure answer, that’s when it becomes a healing event. That’s why when you’re watching your favorite show, even if for like the 50th time, that anxiety is non-existent. Your body is experiencing joy and love. And so when you learn to fuel your healing with joy and love, the anxiety has a real environment, a real chance to resolve into peace. So trust me, it’s not the external conditions, friend. It is not what you were doing on the outside. It is what you are doing on the inside that makes a difference. And when my husband passed, I was genuinely happy and healthy for the first time in my life because I had learned to love myself and my body unconditionally. And in that love, ease became my baseline. Then my body’s new environment became a state where I was no longer stressing and afraid all the time. So there was nothing to be anxious about. You know, there are different types of anxiety, but to your nervous system, it’s the same stress signal and chemicals flooding your body. And we’ve been led to believe that nervous system regulation is this nonstop all-day agenda where you have to regulate and regulate and regulate. But a lot of the healing community still operates from conditioned, struggling mentality and normalized stress and the myth that healing is hard and this lifelong practice that you just never stop doing. And I bought into all of that to myself at one point. But the most significant and lasting healing I have experienced did not take years. It took months. Now, I’m not creating some bar for you to push harder or feel like you’re failing. I’m just saying you can’t anxiety yourself out of anxiety. You can’t stress more to be free of stress. And your nervous system is always listening, always at attention. That’s literally how it’s designed. And so it’s always reading your environment. That means what you do not say is often so much louder than what you do. So all of the demands and the commands and the forcing may feel like you’re being proactive or disciplined or responsible, even. But your nervous system, your body, your cells are listening to other primary signals. And that stress underneath that demanding and commanding and forcing and struggling, that’s the primary signal. That’s why your body is still braced. That’s why your mind is not at peace. You know, try yelling at your dog to calm down and see how effective that is. It’s basically the same thing happening with you and your body. Real peace is achieved when you reclaim total coherence. When your mind, your body, and soul are out of conflict with each other and operating in harmony and in alignment with your authentic and highest self, where nothing is getting imposed because you’re scared of the consequences of just being yourself as you are right now, and nothing has to defend itself.
