How do I deal with family and friends who don’t understand my healing?

Navigating family and friends who don’t understand your healing can feel incredibly isolating and disappointing. This is a common experience, but what truly matters is not whether they understand, but how you show up for yourself amidst their lack of understanding. Your healing path is deeply personal and sacred, and its integrity rests on your commitment to self-love and self-validation, rather than seeking external approval.

Why does healing feel so isolating from loved ones?

It’s common to experience relational changes when you embark on a healing journey and those around you do not. I have personally felt misunderstood by my own friends and family, and I have learned to be at peace with it, no longer needing external understanding. The intense need for others to validate your path often stems from a conditioned need for external validation, which is actually your inner child seeking the love and care they never received. When you don’t know how to self-validate, you task others with meeting your needs, which if they are not on a healing or growth path, are often incapable of doing. And then that fosters a codependent dynamic.

How can I prioritize my healing when others don’t understand?

The first boundary you must establish is with yourself: learning to love yourself unconditionally, keep promises with yourself, and treat yourself with integrity. You heal for yourself and that requires you to validate all aspects of you that weren’t seen or valued, not others. Remain in deep contact to your “why” (why you’re healing) and that helps you honor your own journey, even if others cannot fully grasp it. Also maintain focus on what you can control. You can’t control how others perceive you, but you are in command of your responses.

I delve deeper into navigating relational shifts during healing and the importance of self-validation in an episode of my podcast, The Simple Source, called “How to Stop Feeling Alone and Unsupported in Your Healing Journey.” This episode offers insights on how to foster peace by focusing on your relationship wit yourself rather than external approval.
