Why am I still hurt even after they apologize?

When someone apologizes, but you still feel hurt, your body is telling you a truth your mind might be overriding: verbal repair without behavioral coherence is a stalling mechanism, not true resolution. Most of us were conditioned to equate soothing language with safety, but your nervous system is tracking relational safety, not just emotional performance. That means words alone, even sincere ones, cannot secure you.

Why do words alone not make me feel safe?

Emotional inconsistency in early relationships taught your nervous system to accept minimal signs of care as love. Now, a thoughtful apology might temporarily quiet your anxiety, but if nothing in the relationship shifts, your system splits. Your mind hears resolution, but your body stays braced because it recognizes the pattern of words not being backed by change. Words can soothe you without ever securing you. They can be sincere and beautiful, yet still be a delay tactic if they are not matched by meaningful action. Your body knows that real love makes openness feel natural, not conditional.

What does real relational repair look like?

True relational repair leaves a somatic imprint; it’s something you feel, not just reason your way into. Your body lets go automatically when the other person’s actions align with safety and the environment has genuinely changed. Real repair is not about saying the right thing, but doing the aligned thing. It means the other person notices the rupture and takes responsibility without you prompting them. They move toward the disconnection, choosing differently, and showing through action that the connection matters. Your body will feel regulated without effort, your chest will soften, and your breath will deepen, signaling that the situation itself has become safe again.

I share more about recognizing true relational repair in an episode of my podcast, The Simple Source, called “Why ‘I’m Sorry’ Doesn’t Actually Repair in Love.”
