Why do I feel worse now that I’ve started healing?

If you’re feeling worse after starting healing, your system is reorganizing on a deeper level. This uncomfortable phase is a natural, intelligent part of integration, signaling that your brain, body, and soul are making space for true coherence.

Why does deep healing feel chaotic at first?

Healing is inherently nonlinear, unfolding in layers and cycles because that’s how nature works. Before you stabilize into a new, higher state, your system often passes through a necessary period of instability, like water fluctuating between liquid and solid before it freezes. As you release old emotional densities, your energetic field undergoes a kind of detox, which can feel like increased sensitivity, overwhelm, or a return of familiar patterns. This “gateway effect” means your capacity to process deeper material is expanding, often revealing hidden gifts as well as old wounds.

Is feeling worse during healing normal?

What feels like chaos or a setback is actually profound integration, the vital bridge between transformation and embodiment. Your brain needs space to breathe and encode new safety after breakthroughs, and your subconscious needs time to recalibrate around a new identity. This is how you show your wounded inner parts that peace is safe, even when nothing exciting is happening. My own experience with deeply repressed childhood trauma surfacing after years of healing taught me that discomfort often signals expanded self-mastery, where your system trusts you to meet even the darkest parts of yourself with love.

I dive into this process in more detail in my podcast, The Simple Source, particularly in “Why Healing is Nonlinear and Why You Keep Repeating the Same Patterns” and “How to Go From Breakthrough to Embodiment by Mastering Integration.”
