Why do I lose myself in an intense soulmate connection?

Losing yourself in an intense connection isn’t a sign of its destined depth, but often a reflection of your nervous system’s unhealed relational patterns and what I call spiritual codependency. While soul-to-soul recognition is real and powerful, the consuming nature comes from relying on that connection to validate your worth or wholeness.

Why does an intense connection feel so consuming?

Many people engage in spiritual relationships from a place of codependency, unconsciously seeking external validation because they don’t feel safe in a relationship with themselves. This causes your nervous system to organize around the other person, often because your attachment system is activated by familiar wound patterns that feel intensely recognizable. What feels like destiny can sometimes be a trauma bond, mimicking old relational conditioning where love was perceived as stressful or unstable.

How do I stay grounded in a spiritual relationship?

Your relationship with your highest self determines how you experience every other connection. If you perceive your highest self as being above you, you’ll project that hierarchy onto your partner, turning them into a source of validation. Reclaiming your sovereignty and self-sourcing your own safety means shifting from codependency to healthy interdependence, where you meet another person from a place of inherent wholeness. This ensures that even the most intense connections become a space for mutual growth, rather than self-abandonment.

I delve into this much deeper in an episode of my podcast, The Simple Source, called “Losing Yourself in Relationship: The Somatic Truth About Spiritual Codependency.”
