Your emotions overwhelm you and feel out of control when they are stifled or suppressed, signaling that your nervous system lacks the felt safety to allow them to move as they’re designed. Emotions can be translated as energy in motion (E = mc²). They are meant to flow and provide information, not be trapped within you. This isn’t a flaw in you. It’s a conditioned response that can be unlearned.
What causes emotions to overwhelm me?
All emotions are healthy but many of us grew up without learning how to feel them safely. In my own childhood, for example, expressing anger or sadness was unacceptable, leading to deep emotional suppression and trauma. When emotions are judged, denied, or kept from moving, they get trapped in your body and nervous system. This energetic stagnation then creates dysregulation, making feelings seem overwhelming instead of serving as a source of vital information and guidance.
How can I feel my emotions without losing control?
To embrace greater command of your emotional world, you develop emotional intelligence and maturity, understanding that feelings are processed in the body, not just the mind. You can’t think your way through an emotion; you have to feel it physically to release it. This means allowing movement, whether it’s deep breathing, crying, rocking, or even gently shaking your body, to help the emotional energy flow. Befriending your emotions, rather than identifying with them, communicates safety to your nervous system, allowing them to regulate and free your mind and body from stagnated energy.
To dive deeper into developing a healing relationship with your emotions, I teach more in an episode of my podcast, The Simple Source, called “Unlocking Emotional Freedom: How to Actually Feel, Not Just Think,” and in Chapter 6 of my book, Unconditional: You Are Perfect As You Are.
